sub-surface stock

before 1933 sub-surface lines run 2 companies, district railway , metropolitan railway. circle line operated jointly, collaborated in building prototype in 1900.



district railway

initially district railway cars compatible, except stock, , trains made cars of age, until incompatible f stock arrived in 1920. district classified rolling stock using letters of alphabet in 1925, before fleet rebuilt, forming main line , local pools. h stock designation used in 1925 rebuilt b stock cars , lt in 1930s remaining cars hand-operated doors.



metropolitan railway

the metropolitan railway used both westinghouse (bwe) , thomson-houston (bth) control equipment, making cars incompatible. cars had saloon layout, after 1906 surplus bogie compartment carriages built in 1898 , 1900 converted. compartment stock introduced on watford services after 1927.



london transport

in 1933 metropolitan , district railways merged other underground railways, tramway companies , bus operators form london passenger transport board (ltpb), continued district railway classification system.
