After the Whitman massacre Sager orphans



catherine, elizabeth, , matilda sager meet @ 50th anniversary commemoration of whitman massacre in november 1897.


at point family life ended remaining 4 sager orphans. girls split , grew different families. of them married young.



henrietta had no children. died @ age of 26, having been mistakenly shot outlaw.
matilda had 8 children. spent later life daughter in california, died on april 13, 1928 @ age of 89.
elizabeth had 9 children. lived in portland, oregon, died on july 19, 1925 @ age of 88.
catherine married clark pringle, methodist minister , bore him 8 children. lived in spokane, washington. ten years after arrival in oregon wrote account of sager family s journey west. hoped earn enough money set orphanage in memory of narcissa whitman. never found publisher. died on august 10, 1910 @ age of 75. children , grandchildren saved manuscript without modification, , today regarded 1 of authentic accounts of american westward migration.

in 1897, more 3,000 visitors attended 50th anniversary commemoration of massacre on mission grounds. invited guests of honor of survivors of events of 1847, including catherine sager pringle, elizabeth sager helm, , matilda sager delaney, last surviving sager orphans.
