polistine wasps found colonies in 1 of 2 ways. in species, nests founded small number of reproductive females, possibly single one. 1 of foundresses acquires dominance on other , sole reproducer. nest open (not enclosed envelope) , contains single comb.


in other group, called swarm-founding , nest founded large number of workers , few queens. protected envelope, vespine nest.
