totsuka station opened on july 11, 1887 station on japanese government railways (jgr), predecessor post-war japanese national railways (jnr). station building on west side of station. east gate added in 1937. current building on tracks completed on march 26, 1969.


on march 15, 1930 when yokosuka line trains replaced electric multiple units, tokaido line trains ceased stop @ totsuka station. before tokaido line , yokosuka line separated , station became junction of 2 lines on october 1, 1980, 2 lines used same tracks, yokosuka line trains stopped @ totsuka station. current platforms 1 , 2 did not exist, , platform 1 (now platform 3) served tokyo-bound yokosuka line, while line 2 (now line 4) served away-from-tokyo direction. additionally, current freight lines did not exist, old freight lines located current platforms 1 , 2 are. march 1973 when 1 island platform added, there 2 island platforms, platform 2 serving tokyo-bound trains, , platform 3 serving other direction. lines on platforms 1 , 4 built, not used until 1980.


originally, station handled both passengers , freight. in 1923, separate freight yard completed part of station north of passenger platforms across crossing tōkaidō highway. freight operations discontinued may 1970. addition of new freight lines claimed land of bus terminal in front of station s west gate, bus terminal relocated site of former freight yard in july 1971. bus terminal called second bus center , distinguished larger bus center beside totsukana building on same side of station.


with privatization of jnr on april 1, 1987, station came under operational control of jr east. shōnan-shinjuku line trains , narita express limited express services began stopping @ totsuka station december 1, 2001.


the timetable revised on march 18, 2007, tokaido line acty rapid trains stopped @ station. resolved confusing situation existed before, when shonan-shinjuku line rapid , special rapid trains stopped @ station, tokaido line acty services did not. before change, station changing trains @ acty did not stop. before, tokaido line commuter rapid still not stop @ station.


yokohama municipal subway

the blue line of yokohama subway connected totsuka station may 24, 1987 temporary facilities. permanent subway station opened on august 27, 1989.
