first station

on may 7, 1872 (june 12 in gregorian calendar), yokohama station (original station, sakuragichō station) opened 1 of first railway stations in japan.


on july 11, 1887, railway extended yokohama kōzu station. through trains between shimbashi station , kōzu station required switchback @ yokohama station. on august 1, 1898, line bypassing yokohama station opened avoid switchback. through trains stopped @ kanagawa station or hodogaya station instead of yokohama station, , shuttle trains connected yokohama , hodogaya until hiranuma station opened near present-day hiranumabashi station on october 10, 1901. hiranuma station had no connection public transport such trams, major part of passengers city continued use trains stopped @ yokohama station.


second station

the second station, built in 1915, behind elevated freight line


on august 15, 1915, second yokohama station opened close present day takashimachō station allow tōkaidō main line trains call @ yokohama station. original yokohama station renamed sakuragichō station. jr east uses date opening date of current yokohama station. terminal of keihin line (present-day keihin-tōhoku line) had been in takashimachō since 1914 , merged new station. government-run electric line later year extended sakuragichō.


on 1 september 1923, station destroyed fire in 1923 great kantō earthquake. 6 days later, station reopened temporary building. city of yokohama , ministry of railways agreed in february 1924 station relocated.


on may 18, 1928, tokyo yokohama railway (now tokyu toyoko line) extended former terminal of kanagawa station connected station. extension line passed through construction site of new yokohama station of government railways.


third station

the third station, completed in 1928

on october 15, 1928, third (current) yokohama station opened on north side of second station. tōkaidō main line moved current route, route of bypass line opened in 1898. government railways , toyoko line shared station beginning. on february 5, 1930, keihin electric railway (now keikyu main line) connected station. on december 27, 1933, jinchū railway (now sotetsu main line) connected station. on december 9, 1957, north side underground entrance opened. on december 1, 1965, mars on-line ticket reservation system introduced @ station. on september 4, 1976, yokohama city subway line no. 3 connected yokohama station. on november 7, 1980, new east station building , east-west passage opened. on january 31, 2004, tōkyū tōyoko line platform reopened underground, , on february 1, 2004, minatomirai line opened.


future

on august 26, 2010, jr east announced development of new station building replace current west entrance, tentatively named yokohama station west station building (横浜駅 西口駅ビル, yokohama-eki nishiguchi-eki biru). scheduled open in 2020 before tokyo 2020 summer olympics, development include 26-story retail , office building, station-front tower (駅前棟, ekimae-tō), on site of current west entrance , nine-story building north-east, tsuruya-cho tower (鶴屋町棟, tsuruyamachi-tō), include parking , childcare facilities.
