rügen has total area of 926.4 km, or 974 km if adjacent small islands included. maximum diameter 51.4 km north south, , 42.8 km east west. of overall 574 km-long coastline, 56 km sandy baltic sea beaches, , 2.8 km sandy bodden beaches. highest elevations on jasmund peninsula: piekberg (161 m) , königsstuhl (117 m).

in north-east of island of rügen formed peninsula of jasmund, joined heart of island, muttland, bar of schmale heide between binz-prora , sassnitz-mukran , rail , road embankment @ lietzow. schmale heide separates outer bay of prorer wiek lagoon of kleiner jasmunder bodden. on peninsula of jasmund piekberg (161 m above sea level (nn)), highest point on rügen, , königsstuhl, 118-metre-high chalk cliff in stubbenkammer, forms striking landmark on island. bar, schaabe, links jasmund peninsula of wittow in north of rügen. schaabe, in turn, separates outer bay of tromper wiek lagoon of großer jasmunder bodden. peninsula of wittow , long, narrow peninsula of bug west separated main body of rügen rassower strom, breetzer bodden , breeger bodden. wittow peninsula adjoined in north cape arkona. under kilometre northwest, located @ 54°41 n, northernmost point of mecklenburg-western pomerania. below cliff (gellort) on shoreline siebenschneiderstein - fourth largest glacial erratic boulder on rügen.
the northwestern , western sides of rügen highly indented, little flatter. offshore larger islands of hiddensee , ummanz smaller islands Öhe liebitz , heuwiese. sand removal , deposition baltic sea has countered dredging operations north , south of hiddensee, otherwise hiddensee merge rügen within few years. rügen dotted many glacial erratic boulders, of 22 largest belong legally-protected geotopes (see also:erratics on , around rügen).

climate
