hastings wrote emigrants guide oregon , california induce americans move california, hoping effect bloodless revolution sheer numbers. described california in glowing terms , gave practical advice overland travelers. contrary popular belief, did not promote cutoff bears name in book. merely described in single sentence possible route: direct path leave oregon route, 2 hundred miles east of fort hall; thence bearing west-south west, salt lake; , thence continuing down bay of san francisco. (hastings, pp. 137–138). however, hastings wrote statement before had traveled route himself, , may have been unaware of difficulties in crossing wasatch range , salt flats of western utah.


hastings s dream of empire collapsed when california conquered united states military during mexican–american war. in 1848, mexico ceded california united states under treaty of guadalupe hidalgo.
