enforcement of drastic measure extended xin county (which covered territory of modern-day shenzhen , hong kong) , adjacent counties of guangdong in 1661. 2 inspections determined areas cleared. @ time of first inspection distance of 50 li coast, calculated two-thirds of territory of county affected. year later boundary extended further inland, , remained of county absorbed adjoining dongguan county. 5th year of kangxi, xin had ceased separate administrative county. when new boundaries fixed, inhabitants living outside them given notice move inland. these orders enforced troops. result whole communities uprooted native place, deprived of means of livelihood , compelled settle could. rural people risked lives if ignored government edict move, or ventured prohibited area. recorded 16,000 persons xin driven inland. territory of hong kong became largely wasteland during ban.
end of ban
the ban lifted in 1669, following request governor-general of guangdong , guangxi zhou youde (周有德) , governor of guangdong wang lairen (王來任), , residents allowed return original homes. 1,648 of left said have returned when evacuation rescinded in 1669.
