Background Narva Offensive (18–24 March 1944)
the defeat in preceding narva offensive came unpleasant surprise leadership of leningrad front, blaming on arrival of freshly conscripted 20th estonian ss volunteer division motivated resist looming soviet re-occupation. since beginning of january, leningrad front had lost 227,440 troops killed, wounded, or missing, constituted more half of men participated in leningrad-novgorod strategic offensive. both sides rushed in reinforcements. 59th army brought narva , 8th estonian rifle corps placed under command of leningrad front. after deployment, narva sector acquired highest concentration of forces on eastern front in march 1944.
