clayton drafted tampa bay buccaneers 15th selection of 1st round of 2004 nfl draft. after promising 2004 rookie campaign tampa bay, led nfl rookies , buccaneers 80 receptions 1193 yards, , team 7 touchdowns, clayton had relatively disappointing season in 2005. knee surgery in offseason , season riddled small mistakes on field, finished 32 receptions total of 372 yards , no touchdowns. forced sit out final game of regular season against new orleans saints turf toe injury, , sat out buccaneers playoff match against washington redskins. second season disappointing , inconsistent.


the start 2006 season showed clayton had returned healthy past of 2004. clayton looked 3 receptions , 34 yards despite buccaneers offensive struggles on september 10 in 27–0 loss baltimore ravens. continuing return 2004 form, caught 6 passes 55 yards , touchdown against cincinnati bengals on october 15, 2006. touchdown, thrown bruce gradkowski, came seconds left , gave tampa bay buccaneers go ahead lead first win of 2006 season. unfortunately, following undisclosed injury, buccaneers placed him on injured reserve, ending season 4 games remaining.


he followed overall performance forgettable 2007 season, although did come on strong down stretch. made of opportunities @ end, when buccaneers resting many of starters (which many analysts considered mistake). caught 22 passes during 14-game season, 16 of came in last 4 contests , 10 coming in last two. amassed 192 of 301 yards in 4 games.


clayton got play in first post-season contest on january 6, 2008 against eventual super bowl-champion new york giants. caught 3 passes 39 yards.


after 2008 season clayton became free agent, re-signed buccaneers new five-year deal. after signing deal made famous check in bank quote. bucs released clayton on september 4, 2010.

on november 23, 2010, clayton signed one-year contract new york giants following injuries giants receivers steve smith, hakeem nicks , ramses barden. move reunited clayton giants quarterback eli manning whom shared dorm during nfl combine in 2004. on september 3, 2011 clayton cut giants


on september 23, 2011, giants re-signed clayton after placing domenik hixon on injured reserve. became free agent after season.
