act i

morning. room in war office


lieutenant fosgrove ( thirty , army , not bright ) , colonel gray-balding ( in fifties, forgetful, rather short-tempered quite harmless ) have few official duties occupy them, , passing time away daily telegraph crossword puzzle. interrupted unexpected intrusion of forster stand of mi5. ( m forster stand , how unfortunate – oh, see, yes, won t sit down .) stand briefs them important matter of national security. man called grobchick has perfected vital atomic pile restorer, , britain must keep him safe assassination foreign powers. stand requires gray-balding provide grobchick 2 bodyguards, must masters of disguise. army officers nonplussed @ request, dare not refuse. hearing 2 street musicians playing outside, fosgrove has corporal flight bring them in. musicians, george , percy, down @ heel , highly unimpressive in appearance. fosgrove passes them off stand 2 designated bodyguards, brilliantly disguised.

seven hours later. lounge of haven hotel, dover

george , percy bluff way onto staff of hotel. among guests max, international spy. tells henchman crab , assistants must eliminate agents british government might send. george makes percy disguise himself grobchick. max, fooled, offers percy £30,000 invention. real grobchick arrives. george , percy him hide. war office team arrives, , george , percy panic, fearing wrath of mi5 failure neutralise max. percy hides chimney slips down , sets fire trousers. george, disguised clergyman, rapidly whisks him off.


act iii

scene 1 – same. after supper


gray-balding , fosgrove disguise , engage grobchick in conversation. george , percy discover grobchick has given details of invention hotel s head waiter safe keeping. retrieve them. max, again mistaking percy grobchick, demands details of atomic pile restorer , tells them has hotel surrounded. recognising percy, gray-balding , fosgrove pursue him offstage.



scene 2 – same. few minutes later


in confusion fosgrove has knocked out forster stand. cover error gray-balding , fosgrove put stand s unconscious body in cupboard. recovers , threatens them court martial incompetence. after further impersonations , misdirected harmless gunfire emerges grobchick s atomic pile restorer carpet shampoo. gray-balding , fosgrove turn stand s accusation of incompetence on him, while george , percy make escape.
