once civil war on task of reconstructing confederate telegraph lines began. u.s. government required of major communication lines repaired , controlled u.s. military telegraph corps. due lack of funds, confederate telegraph lines in bad shape when war ended , operators of u.s. military telegraph corps faced mountain of work. these men rose challenge , on february 27, 1865 order quartermaster general transferred union control of telegraph lines in south commercial telegraph companies under supervision of u.s. military telegraph corps assistant superintendents . furthermore, order relinquished control of lines seized government in north , sold lines constructed u.s. military telegraph corps private telegraph companies. once control of telegraph lines turned on telegraph companies, operators discharged 1 one. office remained original telegraph office in war department.
