wpec s signature logo used 1997 until january 31, 2008. numeric 12 had been in use since 1989.
the station signed-on abc affiliate callsign weat-tv on january 1, 1955. owned rko general. original studios on south congress avenue in west palm beach. rko sold station rex rand in 1957. in 1964, gardens broadcasting, company founded businessman john d. macarthur bought station. in 1973, photo electronics bought station john d. macarthur. station moved present studio facilities on fairfield drive in mangonia park same year. on january 27, 1974, weat calls changed current wpec stood photo electronics corporation in reference station s then-current owner, company founded local entrepreneur alexander w. dreyfoos, jr.. previous calls used area radio station owned palm beach broadcasting.
on january 1, 1989, switched affiliations cbs after network purchased wcix in miami (channel 6, wfor-tv on channel 4) tvx broadcast group. wcix s over-the-air signal weaker other miami vhf stations in fort lauderdale , broward county. in contrast, wpec, of west palm beach stations, provides city-grade coverage of broward county. new sign-on wpbf took wpec s old abc affiliation, forcing former cbs affiliate wtvx become independent station. similar situation happened nbc in 1995 when wcix moved channel 4 wfor , nbc demoted channel 6.
this caused wpec lose of broward county audience wfor. result, rival west palm beach station wptv gained broward county nbc market share wtvj on channel 6. in 1996, freedom communications bought station. on april 8, 2009, wpec announced eliminating 24-hour local weather channel (known cbs 12 ) in favor of new local spanish-language television station known 232 mi pueblo tv . however, weather channel reinstated on digital channel 12.3 in mid-2009.
freedom announced on november 2, 2011 bow out of television , sell stations, including wpec, sinclair broadcast group. sinclair had earlier announced acquisition of 4 points media group, owner of wtvx, , 2 purchases result in first full duopoly in west palm beach. sinclair began operating 4 points stations (including wtvx , low-power sisters) through time brokerage agreements @ point in october; company entered similar arrangement freedom stations (including wpec) 2 months later. deal completed on april 2, 2012, although physical operations of wpec , wtvx (along wtcn , wwhb) remained separate. wtvx, wtcn, , wwhb merged wpec s studios.
