phaophanit born in savannakhet, laos in 1961. educated in paris , later studied @ ecole des beaux arts, aix en provence, in france.

vong phaophanit (b.1961 laos) , claire oboussier (b.1963 london) have worked collaboratively on 25 years alongside independent studio practices. collective work includes large-scale installations , sculptural works, films, books, , socially engaged public commissions. explores issues of language, memory, deterritorialisation , forms of meaning making exceed national, cultural , social borders. in 1993 phaophanit nominated turner prize. presented renowned work neon rice field (collection of tate). in same year took part in venice biennale (aperto). in 1994 awarded daad fellowship in berlin duo subsequently relocated. during time in berlin, phaophanit , oboussier produced ‘atopia’ (berliner künstlerprogramm daad, 2003) in response transitioning cultural, political , physical landscape of city. in 2004 created video work ‘all that’s solid melts air (karl marx)’ (collection of tate), part of ‘the quiet in land’, pioneering transnational arts project in luang prabang, lao pdr. work explores precariousness of language , memory , role have in constructing both national , personal identities , engages “instability , ephemerality of meaning, it’s fluctuation across time , languages” *
phaophanit , oboussier have produced number of groundbreaking public commissions including ‘outhouse’ (2004) liverpool housing action trust, sculptural glass ‘abode’ sited within public park collective use of local residents. in 2008 selected channel 4 big art project proposed ‘northern light’ – suspended architectural work north belfast, again conceived collective use of local communities. other key works in public space include neon installations such ‘topography of dreams’ (2007), curzon street station, birmingham , ‘light curtain’ hull truck theatre (2009). ‘light of day’ created neo-natal baby unit @ st georges hospital in london in 2010 , ‘coronium’ (2011) kilden, new performing arts centre in kristiansand, norway. in 2012, part of cultural olympiad, commissioned make ‘light veils’, permanent laser installation weymouth seafront , legacy work town.
in 2011 phaophanit , oboussier completed ‘mute meadow’ on banks of river foyle in derry, northern ireland - major socially engaged public work commissioned part of ‘post-conflict’ re-imagining of city. in 2015 installed ‘dream house’, public sculpture commission downtown toronto explores diasporic notions of home , belonging. recent project ‘it if’ (2015), immersive video installation produced @ block 336 in brixton, london. funded wellcome trust, work experimental collaboration between artists , surgeon professor roger kneebone (imperial college, london), investigating unspoken languages of medical surgery , extending commitment engaged practice, inter-disciplinary dialogue , interest in non-narrative, trans-cultural forms of meaning.
