underside versus upperside


the common crow glossy-black butterfly brown undersides white markings along outer margins of both wings. wingspan 8–9 cm , body has prominent white spots. male has velvety black brand located near rear edge on upperside of forewing. on underside there white streak in same location. white streak present in both male , female. in natural position streak hidden behind hindwing , can seen when butterfly captured , observed closely.

upperside dark brown, broadly paler along terminal margins; fore , hind wing subterminal , terminal series of white spots; on fore wing former more or less oval, curved inwards opposite apex, latter series incomplete, not reaching apex, spots smaller; there small costal spot, , spot in apex of cell , 1 or more discal spots; on hind wing inner series of spots elongate, outer conical.

underside paler brown, white spots larger, more defined. fore wing not violaceous @ apex, spot (sometimes absent) in apex of cell, , 2 or 3 discal spots. hindwing: spot in apex of cell, absent, , discal series of 5 small spots beyond. antennae, head, thorax , abdomen dark brown, and, antennae excepted, sparsely spotted white.
