cincinnati observatory built ormsby m. mitchel @ peak of mount ida, hill overlooks downtown cincinnati. nicholas longworth donated 4 acres (1.6 ha) of land purpose. holy cross monastery , chapel stands today @ site. cornerstone laid on november 9, 1843, , presiding on occasion former president john quincy adams, introduction judge jacob burnet. @ 77 years old, last public speech, , mount ida renamed mount adams in honor.
in 1871, observatory came under control of university of cincinnati , in 1873 transferred mt. adams mt. lookout in order escape smoke , dirt of city, remains today. ground on stands given city john kilgour in 1872. smaller structure, mitchel building, holds original telescope taken mount adams observatory. 1873 building built firm of cincinnati architect samuel hannaford. in 1998 observatory declared national historic landmark.
the asteroid 1373 cincinnati named honor staff of observatory.

the 1845 merz und mahler 11 inch refractor – housed in mitchel building . may oldest continually used telescope in world. used public education programs.
the 1904 alvan clark & sons 16 inch refractor – housed in herget building . used in public education programs , graduate research.
