hamamatsu castle: hamamatsu castle park stretches modern city hall building north. castle located on hill in southeast corner of park, near city hall. built tokugawa ieyasu. rule marks beginning of edo period. tokugawa ieyasu lived here 1571 1588. there small museum inside, houses armor , other relics of period, miniature model of how city might have looked 400 years ago. north of castle large park japanese garden, koi pond, ceremonial teahouse, , commons areas.

haruno, tenryu-ku: december

ever since long ago, mount akiha believed have supernatural powers prevent fires. bow , arrow, sword, , fire dances performed @ akiha shrine. @ akiha temple, firewalking ceremony performed both believers , spectators celebrate festival.


enshu dainenbutsu

saigagake museum, hamamatsu city: july 15

when family commemorates first obon holidays after death of loved one, may request dainenbutsu (buddhist chanting ritual) performed outside house. 1 of local performing arts of region. group forms procession in front of house led person carrying lantern , marches sound of flutes, japanese drums , cymbals.

hamamatsu kite festival

hamamatsu kite festival called hamamatsu festival. hamamatsu kite festival held may 3 may 5 each year, includes tako gassen, or kite fight, , luxuriously decorated palace-like floats. festival originated 430 years ago, when lord of hamamatsu castle celebrated birth of first son flying kites. in meiji era, celebration of birth of first son flying hatsu dako, or first kite, became popular, , tradition has survived in form of hamamatsu kite festival. during nights of hamamatsu kite festival, people parade downtown carrying on 70 yatai, or palace-lake floats, beautifully decorated while playing japanese traditional festival music. festival reaches peak when groups representing city s various districts compete energetically marching through downtown streets.

this festival celebrates hamamatsu s history city of musical instruments , music, , brings dozens of best young pianists on world. has been held triennially since 1991 @ act city concert hall , main hall.


hamakita manyo festival

hamakita-ku, hamamatsu: october

this event takes place in manyo-no-mori park commemorate manyo period , introduce culture. part of festival, people reenact ancient past wearing traditional clothes heian period , presenting japanese poetry readings.


inasa puppet festival

inasa, kita-ku: november

one of few puppet festivals held in japan, featuring 60 performances of 30 plays puppet masters on country. shows provide full day of enjoyment both children , adults.


princess road festival

hosoe, kita-ku: april

this reenactment of procession made princess in palanquin along entourage of on 100 people including maids, samurai, , servants makes splendid scene beneath cherry blossoms along toda river. in edo period, princesses enjoyed traveling road came known hime kaidō (princess road).

in ryusui garden there stream 7 small waterfalls , 80 weeping ume trees pruned give appearance of dragons riding on clouds heavens. there 200 young trees planted along mountainside.
