according local islamic tradition, sanctuary named after holy man named sheikh ahmad al-qatrawani destroyed village of qatra north of gaza. popular belief suggests al-qatrawani left home town of qatra due inability fulfill religious duties there, relocating deserted hill of dar hamouda lived in prayer , self mortification . popular tale claims when al-qatrawani died, dead body descended onto hilltop sanctuary stands.


according local legend town of bir zeit, nearby villagers found sufi derwish laying on site , when asked of origins, said qatra , angels brought him site die. residents of atara, nearby ajjul , silwad provided him food , protection 4 years , when found him dead, buried him west of sanctuary.


many palestinian christians argue, however, site dedicated saint catherine, suggesting etymological origin of qatrawani catherine . hamdan taha points out similarities between muslim tradition of al-qatrawani descending burial place @ time of death christian tradition of saint catherine descending mount sinai @ time of death.


the modern building renovated version of original building built in late mamluk era in 16th century. renovation took place in 1999 undertaken palestinian department of antiquities. sanctuary rectangular building 9.8 meters in width, , 5.9 meters in length. has 2 semi-spherical domes, measuring 3.8 , 3.9 meters in diameter respectively. eastern dome built of finely cut stones, while western dome built of small rough field-stones, both kinds of local origin. northern wall 85 centimeters thick , constructed of small stones, mortar , rubble. eastern room of sanctuary contains mihrab ( prayer niche ) typical orientation mecca required in islamic doctrine.


the cistern, blocked, in front of shrine , collected rainwater in past sanctuary. possibly drew water nearby spring of wadi as-saqi, located 2 kilometers south of site. west of sheikh al-qatrawani sanctuary winepress cut through stone. basin 1.8 meters deep , coated layer of white plaster. stone-cut cave located in front of shrine, blocked in 1984 residents of atara safety reasons . in front of building courtyard , actual tomb of sheikh al-qatrawnani located adjacently west of site , has been plundered number of times.


sherds byzantine, crusader/ayyubid , mamluk eras have been found here.
