on 11 august 2009, reus made germany under-21 debut in friendly match against turkey. on 6 may 2010, earned first call-up senior team friendly match against malta on 14 may 2010. on 11 may 2010, withdrew squad due leg injury picked in last game of season against bayer leverkusen. on 7 october 2011, made debut against turkey. scored first goal team on 26 may 2012 in 5–3 defeat switzerland. on 22 june, scored in uefa euro 2012 quarter-final against greece, first start germany in tournament.
reus established himself regular member of joachim löw s side in 2014 fifa world cup qualification campaign, scoring 5 goals , registering 3 assists in 6 matches. named in germany s squad world cup finals, forced withdraw after suffering ankle injury in team s 6–1 warm-up win against armenia on 6 june.
reus made international comeback in germany s first post-world cup friendly against argentina on 3 september 2014. however, world champions defeated 4–2 side had beaten in world cup final 2 months earlier.
during qualification euro 2016, reus made 4 appearances, scoring once in 2–0 defeat of georgia in tbilisi not selected tournament after suffering groin injury.
