puerto arista 1 of 144 beaches in mexico sea turtles come lay eggs. 1 of twenty 2 beaches these nests of eggs experience high risk of being pillaged. in addition, marine turtles have turned dead on these shores, blamed on illegal fishing, shrimping, nets in prohibited areas. there still illegal hunting of turtles , turtle eggs despite federal ban.
the sanctuary’s main function patrol beach foot , atv fresh turtle nests in order relocate eggs protected enclosures. later, hatchlings released sea. allows visitors participate in both collection of eggs , liberation of hatchlings. activities take place year round turtles come here nest between july , november. in 2008, governor of chiapas visited sanctuary participate in liberation of on 7,000 hatchlings inauguration of centro integral de conservación. in year, half million released, 25,000 visits. in 2010, sanctuary abandoned no personnel , deteriorated facilities. however, since then, there have been rehabilitation efforts.
