five months after completion of royal perth yacht club s america s cup competition, fay issued challenge san diego yacht club. using strict reading of deed of gift, fay realized challenge yacht 90 feet (27 m) or less @ waterline , require defending yacht club meet him in ten months time. worked designer bruce farr , tom schnackenberg build gigantic monohull called new zealand or kz 1. boat built steve martin in mt wellington, auckland , launched on 27 march 1988.


skippered david barnes tactician peter lester, maximum 23.47 m (77.0 ft) along waterline, , said fastest monohull keelboat in world @ time. however, deed of gift being used force competition, san diego yacht club responded taking advantage of vague wording of deed , built catamaran, stars & stripes (us 1), defense. conner , catamaran beat big boat, kz 1, 2-0 in deed of gift races.


fay challenged outcome in court, claiming defenders not sporting in sailing catamaran against big boat. won initial ruling, finding of lower court overturned on appeal, , outcome on water made stand. appellate court decision upheld when fay pressed issue before new york state court of appeals.


kz 1 can still seen in viaduct harbour, outside entrance new zealand national maritime museum in auckland, new zealand.
