the greyfriars bobby fountain in edinburgh includes life-size statue of greyfriars bobby created william brodie in 1872. paid local aristocrat, baroness burdett-coutts, , unveiled on 15 november 1873. stands near south (main) entrance greyfriars kirkyard. monument edinburgh s smallest listed building. built drinking fountain, had upper fountain humans , lower fountain dogs. water supply cut off (together edinburgh s other drinking fountains) around 1975 amidst health scares. both basin areas infilled concrete afterwards. daubed yellow paint, allegedly students, on general election night in 1979, , hit car in 1984. monument restored under supervision of edinburgh district council in 1985. entire base newly carved emulates original exactly. plaque on base reads, tribute affectionate fidelity of greyfriars bobby. in 1858, faithful dog followed remains of master greyfriars churchyard , lingered near spot until death in 1872. permission erected baroness burdett-coutts . inscribed on statue greyfriars bobby, life before death , w.h. brodie sc rsa 1872 .
