one of best performance in top division came in november 2008 when won 11 bouts , awarded first sanshō or special prize, fighting spirit. promoted new high of maegashira 2 january 2009 tournament. although not able come through winning record score of 6–9 creditable, , scored memorable win on new ōzeki harumafuji on opening day of tournament. however, gradually slipped down rankings 3 more losing scores in next 3 tournaments. november 2009 tournament 1 of successful, won 9 of first ten bouts before slowing down finish on 10–5. in september 2010 won second fighting spirit prize, shared stablemate takekaze, after producing fine 11–4 score, having been 7–0. followed solid 8–7 record in november, saw him return maegashira 2 in january 2011, , reached maegashira 1 july.


in march 2014 yoshikaze scored 10–5 maegashira 4. not saw him win third fighting spirit prize, guaranteed him promotion san yaku ranks first time, maegashira above him on banzuke had losing scores. promotion komusubi in may 2014 tournament ended record active wrestler longest career in makuuchi without ever making san yaku appearance (47 tournaments). managed 6–9 @ rank, , though lead demotion, considered relatively strong showing wrestler debuting @ challenging rank. in following july tournament in nagoya, defeated yokozuna harumafuji second tournament in row, time earning first kinboshi in maegashira ranks. added second kinboshi in september beating kakuryū ended tournament losing record , withdrew november tournament after winning 4 of first twelve matches.


in 2015 yoshikaze dropped maegashira 14 after losing records in 5 of last 6 tournaments. recovered in may however, 10–5 result , produced career-best makuuchi score @ nagoya in july, finishing 12–3 , earning fourth fighting spirit prize. excellent form continued in september 2015 when eleven wins maegashira 1 included victories on both competing yokozuna, hakuhō , kakūryū. additionally awarded special prizes outstanding performance , technique. yoshikaze returned rank of komusubi november 2015 tournament , defeated kakūryū second time in row on opening day. went on post wins on both sekiwake , ōzeki gōeidō end tournament 8–7 record. awarded special prize technique second consecutive tournament. efforts saw him promoted rank of sekiwake first time, 59 tournaments after top division debut. second slowest in history, behind fellow oguruma stable member takekaze, took 68 tournaments reach sekiwake.


yoshikaze achieved majority of wins in debut @ sekiwake, lost rank after following tournament score 4–11. earned fifth career gold star in july 2016 tournament defeating harumafuji eighth time in thirteen meetings. despite suffering facial injuries ended tournament 10–5 record , awarded special prize outstanding performance. in march 2017 tournament earned sixth kinboshi defeating kakuryū on day 10. returning sanyaku ranks @ komusubi in may 2017, defeated 2 yokozuna, kisenosato , kakuryū, in first 4 days, , received third technique prize @ end of tournament. produced performance in july, beating harumafuji on opening day , ending 9–6 record: in considertaion technique prize before losing in-form aoiyama on final day. returned him sekiwake rank first time since march 2016. became fifth oldest wrestler post world war ii earn promotion sekiwake @ 35 years, 5 months.
