the idea prešeren monument first proposed group of grammar school students in 1889. in 1891, supported 52 slovene scholars, , finally, in 1898, ljubljana mayor ivan hribar. organised board purpose. hribar announced competition in 1899. 7 sculptors submitted proposals in time, among them franc berneker (sl), anton bitežnik (sl), jakob Žnider (sl), alojzij progar, , ivan zajec, won it. received commission on 18 october 1900.


zajec started work in studio of hans makart in vienna. model prešeren prešeren s portrait goldenstein, , depicted suit of prešeren after model 1830–1840, borrowed in vienna museum. model muse olimpia pozatti, dancer trieste. monument of prešeren cast in krupp (de) foundry in vienna (kaiserlich königliche kunst-erzgießerei) in september 1903, , muse cast in beginning of 1904. costs entire monument around 71,000 kronen, largely raised slovene women , various societies.
