sadiq al-mahdi prime minister of sudan on 2 occasions: first briefly in 1966-67, , second 1986 until ousting on 30 june 1989.

in 1986, sadiq formed coalition government comprising umma party (which led); national islamic front (led brother-in-law, hassan al-turabi); democratic unionist party (led mohammed uthman al-mirghani al-khatim); , 4 small southern parties. on june 30, 1989, government overthrown in coup led brigadier omar al-bashir. post of prime minister of sudan abolished.

mahdi has continued lead umma party in opposition bashir since being ousted in 30 june 1989 coup d état led omar al-bashir. spent period in exile returned sudan in november 2000. ran unsuccessfully 2010 presidential elections, pledging not hand bashir international criminal court faces charges of crimes against humanity , war crimes, arguing destabilise country.
