a horse not on bit because head held @ vertical, or perpendicular ground, horse can maintain headset while remaining stiff, heavy on bit, , unresponsive rider s aids. vertical headset not guarantee means animal on bit, , many novice riders achieve vertical headset, while losing impulsion horse, because ride front back, or pull horse s head down in effort make horse appear accepting aids. seen when horse ridden in gadgets, such draw reins, if rider not skilled enough correctly use piece of equipment.


a horse on forehand or unbalanced not able come correctly on bit, , either lean on rider s hands, placing pressure on bit, pull against rider , root or else brace upward against rein pressure , come above bit . makes contact heavy, , aids can not come through.


some horses avoid contact bit, rather correctly accepting it, , come behind bit . may occur either due evasion horse (so not have listen rider) or because rider using bit or physically trying pull horse on bit. common fault if rider see-saws on reins. horse have strong contact, commonly if head purposefully pulled in rider. additionally, horse bring nose closer chest, or behind vertical.


the important test if horse follow contact forward, , down, if reins softened rider. if horse follows, speak horse chooses touch rider mouth. if quality of contact established, horse working on bit, if head little in front of or behind vertical.
