lakeview used camp , trail path miami, ottawa, , winnebago native american tribes. in 1837, conrad sulzer of winterthur, zürich, switzerland, became first known white settler live in area. in 1853, 1 of first permanent structures built james rees , elisha hundley on corner present-day west byron street (or west sheridan road) meets north lake shore drive , called hotel lakeview, named hotel s unobstructed view of shore of lake michigan. gained characterized resort atmosphere.

also according lakeview east chamber of commerce, lakeview incorporated illinois civil township charter granted illinois general assembly, independent of neighboring chicago. lakeview s first township election held in 1857. main building town hall on intersection of present-day west addison , north halsted streets. building still bearing name stands today former headquarters of chicago police department s 23rd district. lakeview township included land east of western avenue, between devon avenue , north avenue, encompassing community areas of edgewater, uptown, lakeview , lincoln park, eastern sections of community areas of north center , lincoln square.
during civil war, present-day bustling intersection of north broadway, north clark street , west diversey parkway home camp fry. when camp opened in may 1864, served training facility volunteer 132nd , 134th illinois infantry regiments. shortly after deployment columbus, kentucky, camp converted prison confederate soldiers, conditions markedly different of many other prisoner-of-war camps. few residents of area known lakeview township complained of rebel sing-alongs held in camp time time.
lakeview s industry farming, crops of celery, , @ time considered celery-growing capital. 1870 1887 population of township grew 2,000 citizens 45,000. result, there growing need of more public-service access, , lakeview absorbed chicago in 1889 way of meeting demands. in 1889, real estate boom became major economic stimulant. according lakeview east chamber of commerce, on forty percent of neighborhood s present-day buildings constructed during time.

west addison street named after thomas addison, english doctor first described addison s disease. west barry avenue named after commander of continental navy ship lexington during revolutionary war, john barry. west belmont avenue named after american civil war s battle of belmont on november 7, 1861, in mississippi county, missouri. north broadway, used called evanston avenue after nearby municipality of evanston, illinois, renamed after broadway in new york city. north clark street named after legendary frontier explorer george rogers clark. west diversey parkway named after beer brewer michael diversey. william butler ogden, first mayor of chicago, named north halsted street after financiers william h. , caleb halsted. formerly called dyer street, in honor of thomas dyer, mayor of chicago. west irving park road named after author washington irving.
philip sheridan features prominently on corner of west belmont avenue , north lake shore drive, memorialized towering statue depicting sheridan on horseback. u.s. army general namesake of north sheridan road. in 1871 brought troops chicago in aftermath of great chicago fire , authorized mayor joseph medill take control of city under martial law. later made commanding general of u.s. army president chester a. arthur.
