tennessee first sported famous checkerboard design in 1964 under dickey , remained until artificial turf installed @ neyland stadium in 1968. brought design in 1989. idea inspired checkerboard design around top of historic ayres hall.


the checkerboard bordered in orange 1989 until natural grass replaced artificial turf in 1994. return of natural grass brought return of green (or grass colored) border exists today.
