puerto arista has thirty 2 km of wide beaches facing open ocean. beach area, peaks of sierra madre de chiapas can seen in background, covered clouds. climate hot , semi humid rain falling in summer. average annual temperature 27c. these beaches have fine, gray, volcanic sand, flocks of frigatebirds visible. surf can heavy not common. @ low tide, surf gentler , safer swimming. however, dangerous aspect water riptides, capable of sweeping people out sea. these occur beyond second line of wave breaks. there no indications safety of waters , no professional lifeguards. in 2008, 27 of 41 near drowning incidents in chiapas occurred in puerto arista.

tourist infrastructure consists of basic hotels , simple palapa restaurants face ocean. there upscale hotels 3 stars: hotel safari, hotel lucero, aguamarina , arista bugambilias , 1 business offering bungalows josé’s camping , cabañas. palapa restaurants specialize in seafood dishes, similar menus , prices. although there couple of dozen of these restaurants, 5 or 6 open @ given time. on main road near lighthouse, there food stand selling mexican staples.
