there little evidence formation of club except before 1895.

prior schism, stockport, many other clubs lancashire (and yorkshire), had suffered punishment rfu broken time payments.
when 22 clubs met @ george hotel, huddersfield, representative of stockport had been unable attend meeting , had telegraphed meeting requesting club s admission new organisation. duly accepted.
after great schism in 1895, stockport 1 of founder members of new league. in first season 1895–96 league consisted of 22 clubs , stockport finished in 17th position.
in second season 1896–97 league divided yorkshire , lancashire, stockport playing in latter section, stay 1 of remainder of (semi) professional existence. finished in 5th position out of 14 teams.
in 2 following seasons, still in lancashire section, season 1897–98 , 1898–99 finished in 11th position (out of 14 teams).
in fifth season, 1899–00 improved finishing 9th out of 14 teams.
in season 1900–01, still in lancashire senior league, stockport dropped 12th place out 14 teams.
in season, 1901–02 14 clubs broke away form northern rugby league. stockport not among these , so, remaining clubs , several additions lower county leagues, continued in lancashire senior league, became in effect division 2 (west). better season saw mid-table finish in 6th place out of 13 clubs. limited county league information available season (1901–02).
at end of 1901–02 season, county leagues elected 18 teams join new division 2 (7 lancashire , 10 yorkshire , new member south shields) existing second competition scrapped. meant teams excluded senior competitions leaving them several options :-
a) join new lancashire league or lancashire combination (reserve grade)
b) join new yorkshire senior league
c) reverting amateur status within northern union
d) revert rugby union
e) turn association football, many clubs did
f) fold
in season 1902–03 stockport joined new 2nd division. in this, eighth , last season among (semi) professional clubs, stockport finished 18th out of 18 clubs, bottom of league 11 points, whereas morecambe, second bottom, had 20 points.

although not confirmed elsewhere, if dates correct, can assumed stockport rugby (league) club played in lower lancashire league until folding in 1904 or 1905.
