willie nelson inspired start yearly festival 1972 dripping springs reunion, part of lineup. in 1971, 4 music promoters dallas, texas, decided create massive music festival country music audiences. edward allen, michael mcfarland, don snyder , peter smith, chose hurlbut ranch, owned james hurlbut in dripping springs, texas place festival. after working on grounds months prepare site, festival set last 3 days, between march 17-19, 1972. lineup included earl scruggs, hank snow, sonny james, tom t. hall, tex ritter, roy acuff, willie nelson, waylon jennings , kris kristofferson. due lack of funds, event poorly promoted. expected total attendance 180,000 225,000 3 days, failed reach 40,000. security provided 123 men on foot, 40 perimeter horse riders, highway patrolmen , 2 helicopters. according nelson s biographer joe nick patoski, concert helped spark rise of progressive country music , recognition of austin music hub .


the picnic

in 1973, willie nelson s first 4th of july picnic took place in same ranch. nelson selected place because prepared hold concert. event attracted estimated attendance of 40,000, , became annual festival. before concert, texas senate resolution 687 proclaimed july 4, 1975 willie nelson day . organization provided few portable toilets, while trash left around concert site , town. event qualified moral pollution local residents. bad organization of concert, nelson fined us$1,000 violating texas mass gatherings act. during late 1970s bad reputation of concert led problems find venue. in 1976, planned three-day concert had estimate attendance of 80,000, largest in history of picnic. concert ended on july 5 after rain shorted pa system. attendant drowned while 4 stabbed. there 140 arrests, 4 kidnappings , 3 reported rapes. nelson sued ranch owner, ambulance service , 2 attendants.


during 1980s security reinforced in picnics, improving reputation of event. outdoors fenced , incidents lowered. during 1990s picnic held in luckenbach, texas, while in 2000s recurrent location billy bob s texas, @ fort worth stockyards
