the tiples de santo domingo, circa 19th century


one of first dominican priests arrive philippines in 1587 rev. fr. pedro bolaños, o.p. had knack organizing , training boys sing in church. historically documented established such choir in bataan. first santo domingo church built on january 1, 1588 inside intramuros , tradition has boys’ choir established sing @ chapel of virgin of holy rosary venerated in church. can, therefore, said “tiples de santo domingo” has been integral part of santo domingo church since 16th century when present image of virgin of holy rosary sculpted in 1593 , santo domingo church became known shrine.


when venerated image of our lady of holy rosary of la naval de manila brought pontifical , royal university of santo tomas during second world war, boys choir formed , when new church of santo domingo built in quezon city in 1954, “tiples de santo domingo” revived rev. fr. marcelino diaz, o.p. choir director. “tiples” of university of santo tomas continued time later on gave way “tiples” of santo domingo.
