the 1.25-mile (2.01 km) oval favorite of many of drivers race there due unique shape , different degrees of banking in each corner. turns 1 & 2 have characteristics similar new hampshire motor speedway while turns 3 & 4 similar phoenix international raceway , track s egg shape mimics legendary darlington raceway. several nascar sprint cup series teams test @ gateway in preparation these events.

there 1.6-mile (2.6 km) infield road course used sports car clubs , motorcycle organizations through warmer months. road course hosted round of ama superbike championship in 1995. canadian miguel duhamel won superbike class in blistering hot conditions.

in early-january 2008, announced missouri-illinois dodge dealers move sponsorship nascar craftsman truck race nascar nationwide series race, , called missouri-illinois dodge dealers 250. @ 2008 event, carl edwards became fourth driver win 2 nascar nationwide series events @ gateway.


2008 big year nhra @ gateway, legendary 14-time funny car champion john force earned 1,000th career win overtaking ron capps. making event doubly special take place on 59th birthday 1 week after losing daughter ashley force in finals @ atlanta first career win in funny car series. rod fuller beat arch rival tony schumacher in finals, became big win him represented 1 of few times schumacher beat in historic season sarge, won 15 races 7 of them consecutively 31 round wins in row, en route fifth consecutive top fuel title , sixth overall.


the nascar camping world truck series race @ gateway sponsored camping world, becoming camping world 200. coincidentally, race won defending truck series champion ron hornaday, jr. driving #33 camping world-sponsored truck kevin harvick inc..


in 2010, gateway received second nationwide series race due closure of memphis motorsports park. date former late fall event @ memphis. last nascar event held @ gateway until 2014, dover motorsports announced not seek sanctioning 3 events held there in 2010. track did not make announcement concerning of other events track holds. former nashville superspeedway got gateway s place on schedule in july, while race date october still vacant. nhra did not schedule races @ gateway 2011 either.


on november 3, 2010, dover motorsports announced gateway officially closing , ceasing racing operations there. on september 8, 2011, officially announced gateway re-open in 2012 , host 15th aaa insurance nhra midwest nationals september 28–30, under leadership of curtis francois. on december 6, 2012, usac announced track have usac traxxas silver crown series date in 2013 on june 1.


in february 2013, francois announced addition of chris blair executive vice president , general manager. in addition, plans announced addition of world class karting facility (which opened gateway kartplex in june 2014), off-road venue (which opened in may 2015 torc series event) , revitalization plan track s road course.


on october 25, 2013, announced camping world truck series returning gateway on june 14, 2014 first time since 2010.


in october 2016 announced verizon indycar series returning gateway on august 26, 2017 bommarito automotive group 500. after verizon indycar series teams experienced issues surface during may 2, 2017 open test @ oval outside st. louis, track officials undertook multimillion-dollar renovation of racing surface. repaving project began june 19 , completed in late july 2017.
