april 3 - paisley , renfrew railway opened in scotland, 4 ft 6 in gauge railway providing passenger services hauled steam locomotives.
april 18 – andover , wilmington railroad reorganizes , changes name andover , haverhill railroad, reflecting plans extend line haverhill, massachusetts.
april 24 - leipzig-dresdner eisenbahn, first major railway line built between important cities in germany, begins passenger operations. orders locomotive columbus ross winans, first exported united states.

july 4 - grand junction railway, first trunk railway completed in britain opened birmingham warrington, england (82 mi (132 km)), connects other lines.
