with end of world war ii in europe in may 1945, allied control council succeeded former nazi regime in germany; part of action, deutsche reichspost (the postal service of german reich) absorbed occupation authorities. germany divided 4 occupation zones, , berlin 4 sectors; territories east of oder-neisse rivers placed under polish , soviet authority. 1 of first tasks of restoring civil government in germany involved restoration of postal , telecommunications services.


the german central administration communication services (deutsche zentralverwaltung für das nachrichtenwesen) began work in soviet occupation zone under jurisdiction of soviet military administration in germany on 27 july 1945. post office in soviet zone fell under authority. initially, individual states (länder) in soviet zone issued own stamps, 1946, stamps bearing inscription deutsche post, valid in 4 occupation zones, being issued.


when negotiations general german currency reform broke down, western allies proceeded currency reform in west germany, , on 21 june 1948 deutsche mark introduced. in response, soviet union announced reform of east german currency on 24 june 1948; east german mark became currency soviet zone, , stamps marked overprints. established economic separation of 2 german states. in july 1948, stamps of common issue overprinted words soviet occupation zone , subsequently soviet zone issued different stamps western zones, all, however, under deutsche post label.


the federal republic of germany (frg) founded on 23 may 1949; formation of german democratic republic followed on 7 october 1949. in frg deutsche post renamed deutsche bundespost (german federal post) in 1950, while gdr retained term deutsche post . due berlin s occupation status, west berlin postal service technically independent of west german bundespost; known deutsche bundespost berlin. however, no such requirements applied dp operating in east berlin.
