beyer bachelor , had no children. rich man, began spend wealth on building schools , churches. education main priority. supported ragged school church day , sunday schools, scholarships manchester grammar school (where governor) , @ university level owens college (effectively creating pathway child poor background – such beyer s – graduate university degree in engineering, restricted afford such education).
