tribe s 30-minute narrative short, greystone, revisits 1 of 20th century’s shocking , mysterious society murders. filmed on location @ greystone mansion in beverly hills california, in rooms killings took place, , using dialog appropriated dozens of hollywood feature films shot within storied estate, greystone proposes series of explanations how los angeles oil tycoon , personal assistant might have arrived @ deaths.

critical mass kerry tribe s tribute hollis frampton’s groundbreaking experimental film critical mass (1971). hollis frampton s original work captures argument between couple , cuts series of rhythmic, repetitive, fragmented phrases. tate museum in 2012 , museum of modern art in 2013, tribe had actors nick huff , emelie o hara reenact classic structuralist film.

milton torres sees ghost, 2010

in tribe s installation, milton torres sees ghost, magnetic audio-tape loops between 2 listening stations. each listening station equipped reel-to-reel audio player , oscilloscope displays visual representation of soundtrack. soundtrack features account of american fighter pilot’s encounter ufo on british air space in 1957, kept secret until british government released records of event in 2008. testimony edited that, @ times, man seems describing technology used image mysterious aircraft, whilst @ other times talking technology present in installation itself. tape moves around space, passes through 2 decks—one continuously lays track down while other erases it, therefore, providing visitors intact soundtrack in 1 location , fragmented version in another. installation includes censored , later declassified documents relating investigation of milton torres’ sighting.

the last soviet (2010) looping 10-minute video tells story of russian cosmonaut sergei krikalev, stranded on mir space station 311 days in 1991 during collapse of soviet union. video footage of model of interior of mir constructed in tribe’s studio intercut various archival materials related moment in history, including film footage of performance of ballet swan lake used censor russian news broadcasts of political turmoil, images of tanks on streets of moscow, , photographs depicting aspects of russian space program. throughout image sequences, male voiceover recounting forgotten cosmonaut’s story personal point of view in english russian subtitles alternates female voiceover giving historical account of period in russian english subtitles.

h.m., 2009

h.m. two-channel presentation of single film looping through 2 projectors right screen shows section of film 20 seconds after left screen. film based on true story of anonymous, memory-impaired man, famous amnesiac known in scientific literature patient h.m. in 1953, when 27 years old, h.m. underwent experimental brain surgery intended alleviate epilepsy. unintended result radical , persistent amnesia. though no longer able make lasting memories, short-term recall, lasting 20 seconds, remained intact. structure of installation , nature of material produce sensation of mnemonic dissonance experienced patient h.m…
