during heyday of brahmin domination in 1900s, brahmin tamil used lingua-franca inter-caste communication. principal characters in tamil films of period (1930s , 1940s) spoke brahmin dialect. however, rise of pure tamil movement , entry of dravidian ideologues tamil cinema in 1950s, brahmin tamil gradually displaced public spheres. today, brahmin tamil used in films , television soaps centred on brahmin society. brahmin tamil, has however, continued flourish among expatriate brahmin community.


the first systematic study of brahmin tamil undertaken jules bloch in 1910. however, detailed study conducted k ramanujan , william bright in 1960s. more recent researches on brahmin tamil , other socio-dialects have been conducted kamil zvelebil.
