maharaja sher singh (r. 1841 - 1843)


sada kaur kept on trying bring ranjit singh closer daughter , felt happy when mehtab bore ranjit second son (and first child) in 1804. thanking god (ishwar) child named ishar singh. prince died in infancy - @ age of 1 , half years. mehtab kaur pregnant again in 1807 , gave birth twin sons, sher singh , tara singh in batala. ranjit near jawalamukhi when received news of birth, rushed amritsar pay thanksgiving visit golden temple there. birth of sons celebrated greatly. there cheering in illustrious camp , when ranjit returned lahore, gave away vast entire-ties in philanthropy , city enlightened few nights.


historians differ on whether sher singh , tara singh ranjit singh s biological sons. during march 1837, on occasion of marriage of kanvar nau nihal singh, henry edward fane, nephew , aide-de-camp commander-in-chief, india, general sir henry fane, spent several days in ranjit singh s company, reported maharaja never thoroughly acknowledged sher singh. contemporary historian, joseph davey cunningham, attended 1838 conversations between ranjit singh , lord aukland, recorded maharaja had doubts.


however, khushwant singh, writing in 1962, considered rumours regarding parentage of sher singh , tara singh inaccurate , had been spread kharak singh , mother, datar kaur, in order reduce possibility of ranjit singh preferring sher singh, fast becoming father s favourite. despite doubts, ranjit singh gave sher singh commands in army , conferred honours on him, although kharak singh remained favourite. however, no honours bestowed on tara singh , not permitted appear in court.
