the base served troop staging ground during world war ii under control of hampton roads port of embarkation. camp founded in late 1942 , approximately 1,700-acre (6.9 km) complex, built in largely virgin forest. @ peak, camp patrick henry had capacity of hosting approximately 35,000 individuals @ 1 time. these included american troops of every branch of military service, troops of other allied armies, , civilians bound special missions overseas. although of military personnel processed through camp during war replacements, many noteworthy units staged. complete units processed in 1943 included 45th thunderbird , 85th custer , , 88th blue devils infantry divisions. during 1944 camp handled 31st dixie , 91st powder river , 92nd buffalo infantry divisions, 2nd cavalry division.


nearly 3 quarters of million men , women passed through camp during 1943-44, before boarding transport ships @ hampton roads port of embarkation, of them bound deployment in western europe. january 31, 1946, total number of personnel pass through camp 1,412,107. in later stages of war, camp served demobilization point many soldiers returning home.


the camp had own post office, restaurant, movie theater, rail system transported soldiers train downtown shipside @ chesapeake bay.
