aboard hornet, voris saw action in battle of santa cruz islands, battle of tarawa, , battle of philippine sea (the so-called great marianas turkey shoot wherein on 300 japanese aircraft shot down american fliers, enjoyed more 12-to-1 kill-to-loss ratio in 1 day). during these engagements in pacific war earned fighter ace status, recording total of 8 confirmed fighter-to-fighter kills.



i shot down first japanese 0 @ guadalcanal. didn t see 1 coming behind me , got shot , knocked out of sky. didn t bail out—they ll shoot out of parachute , if go water sharks eat you. full of shrapnel wounds , had dead stick—i d lost engine—but got guadalcanal. lucky boy.



voris rejoined enterprise , vf-2 after recovering injuries, chosen lieutenant commander edward butch o hare , admiral arthur w. radford 1 of 4 bat team fighter pilots conduct experimental night fighter operations intercept , destroy enemy bombers attacking allied landing forces on atoll of tarawa. assigned famed mission darkness launched near dusk in pursuit of japanese fleet. knowing exhaust fuel supplies long before returning safety of carrier, flight nevertheless sought out target. voris landed on fumes after shooting down japanese 0 fighter , flying dead reckoning in total darkness.


after war s end, voris (now holding rank of lieutenant commander) assigned chief instructor advanced tactics @ naval advanced training command (natc) @ naval air station daytona beach, florida.
