History Upper St. Clair High School






upper st. clair high school established in 1957, creation of tenth grade class. prior 1957, upper st. clair students completing ninth grade @ ft. couch school enrolled transfer students @ neighboring high schools, mt. lebanon, upper st. clair township paying tuition out-of-jurisdiction students. when mt. lebanon high school, due crowded conditions, decided no longer accept upper st. clair students, upper st. clair school board voted create high school. dr. carl streams recruited mt. lebanon become new supervising principal, , in turn recruited high school faculty. 1 grade added ft. couch school each year 1957 through september 1959, when first high school senior class enrolled. inaugural class graduated in june 1960, , numbered 74 students, continuing on college. class of 1960 created many of traditions , artifacts high school, including school colors, alma mater, mascot, yearbook, , school newspaper.


concurrently, new high school building constructed @ northwest corner of intersection of mclaughlin run , washington roads, formerly clifton school had been located. class of 1962 graduated new building, although had not attended classes there. completion of new high school building, ft. couch school reverted earlier status junior high school, middle school.


during dr. william pope s tenure district superintendent, upper st. clair high school substantially remodeled in 2000. renovations included replacements of of school s aging building; mechanical systems; , allowed many technological advancements such widespread internet access. renovations improved facilities, allowing professional-sized theater, 2 full-sized gymnasiums, weight room, , racquetball court. academic facilities improved 12,500-square-foot (1,160 m) library @ center of academic wing. library dedicated dr. pope in 2003 upon retirement.


in late 18th century, higbee school, one-room log cabin, first known school in area , located on northeast border of present upper st. clair. first school west of alleghenies.
