behavior

rainbow sharks tank-bottom , aquarium-surface cleaners. being bottom- , mid-level dwellers, consume leftover fish food, eat algae growing off surfaces. known peaceful own kind in wild, have been known aggressive 1 if kept in tank. threat displays , fighting occur. fighting behavior involves head-and-tail butting, , biting.. large rainbow shark continuously chase smaller 1 until smaller 1 dies, or chase other fish out of territory, in confined environments aquaria. may increase risk of fish jumping out of tank. makes breeding difficult. provision of hiding places , hollowed decors such plants or artificial cave-like , tunnel-like aquatic ornaments minimize typical behavior. due behavioral characteristic among own kind, rainbow sharks not recommendable new aquarist. keeping them relatives, such red-tailed sharks, bala sharks , black sharks should avoided, chase , attack them well.


tank requirements

an adult rainbow shark thrives in minimum of 30 gallons of water, aquarium length of 48 inches, @ neutral ph range (6.0 8.0 ph), temperatures between 24 , 27 °c (75 , 81 °f), , water hardness maintained @ 5 11 dh. must have space, swim around , terrorize other fish in tank under size.


compatibility

rainbow sharks compatible barbs , rainbowfish, upper- , middle-tank dwellers. can live danios, loaches, plecos, rasboras, , gouramis. not compatible smaller, more timid fish in tank, sharks may chase terrorize them chasing them out of his/her territory.


diet

rainbow sharks not picky herbivorous , omnivorous eaters, consumers of algae in form of tablets, wafers , flakes. eat live foods, such insect larvae, tubifex worms, periphyton, crustaceans, phytoplankton, zooplankton , aquatic insects. diet include lettuce , spinach. eat frozen bloodworms , brine shrimp.


breeding

no actual breed sequence has been documented in aquarium setting. although known egg-layers, reproduction of rainbow sharks difficult in aquarium setting. large numbers bred in southeast asian commercial farms.
