during 1850s , 1860s durham athletes travelled neighbouring towns mount forest compete in curling matches during winter , cricket matches during hot southern ontario summers. local cricket league in 1860s included, durham , mount forest, owen sound, chesley, walkerton, , listowel. in 1882, harriston , dundalk joined local league. 40 years, durham maintained junior, senior, , school league team. 1910s, cricket dropped in popularity , no longer consistently played people of durham. soccer, known football, became popular in late 1870s replaced lacrosse in 1890s. town of durham enjoyed sports @ turn of 19th century, durham used dedicate 3 days per year day-long displays of athletics. these days involved soccer, lacrosse, cricket, , baseball games, dawn until dusk, played townspeople.


in 1908, first ever indoor ice arena built thomas brown facilitate towns growing fascination sport of hockey. @ least 2 outdoor arenas had been built in recent years, meant permanent replacement. first hockey game played in arena on january 1, 1909. new arena built in 1952 through fund raising kinsman club, rotary club, , branch 308 of royal canadian legion. hap mcgirr guardian of arena until 1974. arena condemned in 1975 , current complex finished construction in 1977.

durham considers hockey town, , part true. hockey popular pastime , draws on 250 children , teens minor hockey system. durham has won number of all-ontario championships. town s parent club under minor hockey guidelines grey-bruce highlanders aaa hockey team. durham hockey first organized in 1900s frank irwin , peter gagnon. erben schutz , martin lauder found success through durham hockey, playing in 1920s nhl s boston bruins. town won first major hockey award in 1930-31 season 1 of precursors durham huskies won junior northern hockey league. durham s first ontario hockey association senior championship happened in 1935-36, won precursor durham huskies. in fact, huskies (before called huskies) 3 different hockey teams: junior team, intermediate team, , senior team. 1952, year team named there intermediate team, quite dominant in league. intermediate hockey became known senior aa . senior team extremely successful, winning multiple championships , competing allan , hardy cups, folded before 1992-93 season. durham flyers short lived team in 1950s, did not find success in 3 years of existence. in 1996, durham granted creation of durham huskies junior hockey team metro junior hockey league. jr. huskies folded in 2001. ever-successful durham thundercats senior hockey team have brought town 15 woaa championship trophies , remain @ top of woaa day. called 72 s coincide founding , fill durham community centre every friday night.


in remembrance of 2 of greatest teams in durham hockey history, 1989 greater ontario senior aa champion durham huskies made hardy cup semi-finals play off against 1989 woaa intermediate grand champion durham thundercats on april 4, 2009 in 20th anniversary alumni game.


the durham community centre home of durham skating club, founded in 1950s. club offers variety of programs young , old, friendly, fun atmosphere. annual carnival produced each year @ end of season showcase of skaters talent , attract crowd of huge proportions. in january 2007 club hosted weskate, annual area fun competition, highly successful, volunteers , organizers.


durham has soccer , baseball youth programs , competes in local leagues. of durham s soccer played across durham community centre @ durham soccer field. baseball played outdoors behind durham community centre in durham ball parks. durham youths still enjoy playing lacrosse, sport has not been organized in durham many decades. generally, players have travel williamsford or owen sound play lacrosse. durham curling rink on east end of town beside saugeen valley community school, , has been long enjoyed pastime people of durham.
