vine charcoal created burning sticks or vines.
powdered charcoal used tone or cover large sections of drawing surface. drawing on toned areas darkens further, artist can lighten (or erase) within toned area create lighter tones.
compressed charcoal charcoal powder mixed gum binder compressed round or square sticks. amount of binder determines hardness of stick. compressed charcoal used in charcoal pencils.
