durham presently has 2 schools: spruce ridge community school , st. peter , st. paul s catholic school. spruce ridge result of amalgamation of saugeen valley community school , durham district community school. durham district used town s high school until 1970s when amalgamated hanover s high school form john diefenbaker secondary school. students graduate srcs attend grey highlands secondary school in flesherton or jdss in hanover. durham has arena can hold 3000 people , has art gallery. town hosts annual fall fair attracts many visitors. there public library , couple of small bookshops. durham home of branch 308 of royal canadian legion , multiple churches variety of denominations. durham agricultural society founded in 1858. durham loyal orange lodge has existed in durham since 1850s. durham horticultural society dates @ least 1896. durham s masonic lodge chartered in 1873. girl guides have been presented since 2 years after canadian founding, 1912. first rotary club meeting held in durham on february 17, 1938. kinsmen club founded may 30, 1950 , kinette club founded march 28, 1957. boy scouts in durham date 1920s. durham & district optimist club chartered june 14, 1988.


as of town census in 1861, durham had 4 churches: free church (presbyterian church of canada in connection free church of scotland), church of england, wesleyan methodist, , baptist church. durham has had cornucopia of churches, day town scattered beautiful old buildings of faith. durham baptist church founded reverend alexander stewart, , dates mid-19th century. in 1902, frame of church moved , new large red brick church built replacement. building detailed beautiful stained glass windows. durham foursquare gospel church founded in 1929 in tent. year later, in 1930, church took permanent residence on town s main street. presbyterian church founded in 1850s free church . granted 10 acres (40,000 m) of land crown in 1852. in 1925, presbyterian, methodist, , congregational faiths combined form united church. in durham, presbyterian , methodist churches followed order, merger did lead formation of knox united church on top of durham hill; congregation joined former methodists had met in town since 1849. methodists had earlier met @ ebenezer church, mile west of durham. minority of presbyterians (feb. 1 1925 vote 218-165) wished remain continuing presbyterians, , present durham presbyterian church [1] opened in 1927. methodist church erected in mid-1860s. first anglican service happened in 1849. service held in home of 1 of edge or hopkins families. services held in family homes travelling minister owen sound until trinity anglican church built in durham (1861?). burned down in 1876 , rebuilt in 1877. structure still stands there today despite multiple lightning strikes. catholic services in durham date 1852, first being held jesuit missionary reverend casper matoga. first catholic church built in durham 1867 burnt down arsonist on july 4, 1870. second catholic church purchased $900 in 1892. church s main hall, known @ st. andrew s hall used place of worship until 1940s. in 1940, st. peter s roman catholic church created on top of durham hill, right beside st. peter , st. paul s catholic school. fellowship baptist church founded in 1990. there jehovah s witness church west of durham on grey road 4.
