the philadelphia mint
the mint s largest facility philadelphia mint. current facility @ philadelphia, opened in 1969, fourth philadelphia mint. first built in 1792, when philadelphia still u.s. capital, , began operation in 1793. until 1980, coins minted @ philadelphia bore no mint mark, exceptions of susan b. anthony dollar , wartime jefferson nickel. in 1980, p mint mark added u.s. coinage except cent. until 1968, philadelphia mint responsible official proof coinage. philadelphia site of master die production u.s. coinage, , engraving , design departments of mint located there.
denver
the denver mint
the denver branch began life in 1863 local assay office, 5 years after gold discovered in area. turn of century, office bringing in on $5 million in annual gold , silver deposits, , in 1906, mint opened new denver branch. denver uses d mint mark , strikes coinage circulation, although did strike, along 3 other mints, $10 gold 1984 los angeles olympic commemorative. produces own working dies, working dies other mints. although denver , dahlonega mints used same mint mark d, never in operation @ same time, not source of ambiguity.
san francisco
a coin press built san francisco mint morgan & orr in 1873. located @ ana money museum in colorado springs.
the san francisco branch, opened in 1854 serve goldfields of california gold rush, uses s mint mark. outgrew first building , moved new facility in 1874. building, 1 of few survived great earthquake , fire of 1906, served until 1937, when present facility opened. closed in 1955, reopened decade later during coin shortage of mid-60s. in 1968, took on proof-coinage production philadelphia, , since 1975, has been used solely proof coinage, exception of anthony dollar , portion of mintage of cents in 1980s. (these cents indistinguishable minted @ philadelphia.)
west point
the west point branch newest mint facility, gaining official status branch mint in 1988. predecessor, west point bullion depository, opened in 1937, , cents produced there 1973 1986. along these, identical produced @ philadelphia, west point has struck great deal of commemorative , proof coinage bearing w mint mark. in 1996, west point produced clad dimes, collectors, not circulation. west point facility still used storage of part of united states gold bullion reserves, , west point united states production facility gold, silver , platinum american eagle coins.

while not coin production facility, u.s. bullion depository @ fort knox, kentucky, facility of mint. primary purpose storage of united states , other countries gold , silver bullion reserves.
