the area slopes gently upwards towards south , east, elevation of around 50 metres @ western boundary near wybunbury, high point of 76 metres @ sj714494, on south cheshire way near ellesmere farm. outside hough village, parish predominantly rural, major land use being agricultural. swill brook runs along parts of eastern boundary of parish, , unnamed tributary forms part of southern boundary. numerous small meres , ponds scattered across area. several small areas of woodland fall within parish, including cobb s moss , hough gates. east of cobb s lane, south of hough village, lies hough common, area of common land designated county site of biological importance (grade b).
newcastle road (the old a500) runs east–west @ north of parish. cobb s lane runs north–south through parish, joining newcastle road north-east of parish boundary in chorlton. pit lane connects newcastle road , cobb s lane, forming triangle in hough village located. b5071 (stock lane) forms short stretch of western boundary of parish; runs newcastle road through wybunbury. wrinehill road connects b5071 cobb s lane, forming part of southern parish boundary. a500 formerly ran through parish, has been diverted bypass north.
the national cycle network route 70 follows cobb s lane. 2 major public footpaths cross parish: south cheshire way runs north–south , crewe , nantwich circular walk runs east–west. crewe–stafford railway line runs north–south through chorlton, east of parish.
