in 1904 ship purchased canadian government under advice of joseph-elzéar bernier, had surveyed ship before acquisition. ship renamed arctic , under command of bernier explored arctic archipelago. bernier , arctic made annual expeditions canada s north. on 1 july 1909, bernier, without government approval, claimed entire area between canada s eastern , western borders way north pole. bernier left ship during first world war, returning command arctic again 1922–1925. vessel s end not agreed upon. according schiffe-und-mehr.com, arctic abandoned in 1925 , left rot @ moorings. maginley , collin claim vessel broken in 1926 while miramar ship index ship abandoned in 1927.
