there have been several railway incidents in backwell area. on 20 september 2002, 19:40 first great western service plymouth gloucester delayed @ nailsea & backwell @ around 22:00 after british transport police called deal 2 men assaulted guard following altercation smoking in non-smoking area. several passengers treated inhalation of cs gas. assault on guard occurred on 9 october 2009, when 3 youths verbally abused , spat @ guard after boarding train @ parson street without tickets , refusing pay them. 17-year-old weston-super-mare due in court on 23 december 2009 in connection incident, having been identified use of dna swab kits, available great western railway staff. more unusual incident occurred on 18 september 2013 when cow escaped nearby field , found way onto tracks @ station, causing several hours of delays services between bristol , exeter.
a serious incident occurred on 17 october 2004, when wessex trains class 143 pacer dmu 143613, forming 20:06 2w63 service bristol temple meads weston-super-mare 143621, caught fire between site of former station @ flax bourton , nailsea , backwell. fire services took 2 hours blaze under control. none of 23 passengers , crew killed, 3 treated on-site effects of smoke inhalation. 1 carriage burnt out, , other badly damaged, causing train written off. line through nailsea closed until 03:30 following morning, when train hauled st philips marsh traction , rolling stock maintenance depot examination. unit later taken crewe works, stored, cardiff canton tmd scrapped. rail safety , standards board issued report incident, concluding fire caused electrical arcing between live starter motor cable (which had damaged insulation) , unit s underframe, causing accumulated oily residues ignite.
